Separate three surfaces before choosing a size
A compact can carry a decorative lid treatment, a small underside shade label and an outer-carton label. They do different jobs. Measure the actual flat underside recess and leave clearance for hinge, clasp, feet and any raised tooling. A circle drawn to the nominal compact diameter is often too large for the flat zone.
Check whether the carton is printed directly or receives an applied label. An applied label can make late shade additions easier when a common carton is already stocked, but it adds a placement step and possible edge visibility. Direct printing may make more sense when the line is stable. Compare the finished pack, not just a unit label price.
Make the shade code survive a crowded packing table
Imagine two adjacent beige shades. On screen they seem different; under a packing light, the colour blocks may look almost identical. Keep a short readable shade name or code on the underside, and repeat the same identifier on the carton. The illustrated P01/P02 codes are fictional graphic examples, not a real SKU system.
Do not let decorative copy displace approved product information. The responsible brand team should supply the final ingredients, market wording, quantity and any required symbols. A printer can help fit approved copy, but should not write it from guesswork. If a barcode is required, ask the retailer and the brand's GS1 owner for the assigned data and placement rules. GS1's barcode guidance recommends keeping symbols clear of carton folds and other obscuring features.
Check the label against daily contact
Compacts travel in handbags and are repeatedly opened. A proposed underside label should be checked for adhesion on the exact case resin and texture, rubbing against other items, legibility and whether the edge catches when the compact rests on a surface. A finish that looks premium on a carton may not be the best choice for an underside identification label.
Keep a physical sample of every surface with the approved artwork. Avery Dennison's beauty-label materials overview describes a range of material and finish choices, but the actual compact still needs its own proof. The artwork proof confirms type and layout; it cannot certify adhesion or abrasion resistance.
Quote by component and shade
List compact underside labels, lid labels if any, and carton labels as separate components. For each, state shape, usable area, artwork versions, quantity per shade and application method. If the carton is common across shades but the underside varies, say so explicitly. That may change the efficient print plan.
