Use the finished carton as the measuring tool

Ask for the supplied carton die line and a folded, filled sample. Identify the front flat panel, top opening, side folds, glue flap and any handle. An adhesive label should not cross a crease merely because the flat dieline makes it look convenient. If a security or closure label is intended, brief that function separately.

A small range can use one printed carton with separate front labels for different formulas or scents. A large, stable run might be cleaner and simpler with artwork printed on the board. As a label supplier, I would still ask for the direct-print alternative in the comparison: hand application and label materials belong in the total cost.

Let the package identify itself quickly

Put “LAUNDRY POWDER” and the product variant ahead of decorative bubbles. An original wash-cycle icon, modest colour band and clear weight or size hierarchy can help distinguish powder from detergent pods, fabric softener or a stain-remover product already in the same catalogue. Avoid implying that a graphic is a safety or sustainability certification.

Suppose one illustrative buyer wants three scents in matching cartons. Another buyer needs two formulations with different approved instructions. The first may be able to share most artwork. The second needs version control on the information panel even if the front pictures look related. Small differences in required content should not be treated as a last-minute printer edit.

Test board, ink and adhesive together

Coated board, uncoated kraft and printed board can behave differently as label surfaces. Request a proposed face material, adhesive, print and finish for the actual carton. Apply physical samples to production board, including any board coating. Inspect edge lift after folding and ordinary handling.

Powder dust on the packaging line can change the application conditions. The answer may be to clean or change the application step, not merely specify a stronger adhesive on paper. Agree a repeatable sample check with the packer; do not claim that a swatch-book result represents a dusty production line. Avery Dennison's label material overview shows why face material, adhesive and finish should be considered as a construction.

Count the components in the quote

For a hypothetical two-formula project with 750 cartons each, state two front designs at 750 labels. If there are different back information panels, add two more designs at 750. If the carton itself is preprinted, note which elements stay on the board and which change with the labels.

Include the folded carton sample, board specification, applied-label zone, artwork versions, quantity per version and whether labels are hand or machine applied. The YT Labels buying guide lists the rest of the procurement brief; the inquiry form can carry the details. Before approval, stand three finished cartons together and look for the variant that is hardest to read.
