Measure the back panel with the hinge in mind

Ask for the assembled empty compact and a drawing. The nominal length and width may include a curved rim, hinge blocks or raised feet. Trace only the flat area where a pressure-sensitive label can lie without bridging a recess. Leave clearance around the hinge and opening notch so fingers can still operate the case.

The pictured Grove back label uses a square grid that follows the nine-pan arrangement inside. That is easier to check than a comma-separated list of names. But a shade map only works if the printed orientation matches the palette when opened. Mark a top edge on the dieline, then compare it to the filled palette before approving the proof.

Choose what the back label must do

If one palette has nine shades, its back may need the palette name, shade map, net quantity and other approved market information. For a multi-palette range, do not paste the Dune back art onto Grove and change only the colour: the shade names, codes and any product details may differ. Ask the brand team for a version-controlled master list.

The FDA cosmetics labeling guide explains US labeling requirements and the importance of accurate product information. Requirements vary by market and product, so the label printer should not invent ingredients or certification marks to fill space. If the compact back cannot carry readable approved copy, consider a carton or insert rather than shrinking everything.

Proof in a buyer's hands

Print the art at actual size. Place it on a filled compact, open the lid, point to a pan and find the corresponding name without rotating the case twice. Then check the label edge after repeated opening and normal handling. If an underside label interferes with the compact sitting flat, shift the dieline inward.

The front decoration may be direct printed while the back information is an applied label. That mixed approach can make variant changes easier, but it also creates two artwork and production approvals. Ask for both routes in the quote rather than assuming a sticker is always cheaper.

Send a brief that prevents the wrong shade file

Provide the exact compact, filled pan layout, back-panel dimensions, hinge orientation, approved shade list, artwork for each palette, quantities per palette and intended application method. Request a digital proof plus a labelled physical sample. Our cosmetic label collection and label buying guide cover the wider order brief. The back label has done its job when the person holding the palette does not need to ask where shade five went.
