Know which label does which job

A carton or outer-case label may identify a candle SKU, scent, vessel colour, pack count and internal artwork version. A separate logistics label can identify a particular shipping unit. Those are related jobs, but not the same thing. A carrier label is another workflow again.

GS1's logistics label guideline distinguishes a trade-item carton label from a GS1 logistics label and describes the SSCC as the identifier for a logistics unit. Do not print a fake SSCC or treat a decorative barcode as a scannable logistics code. Confirm the actual identification scheme with the brand's warehouse, trading partners and GS1 provider where relevant.

The mixed-scent box is where shortcuts fail

Imagine two hypothetical orders. One contains a single candle scent and vessel type, packed twelve identical units per case. The other is a seasonal assortment with three scents, two jar sizes and a gift box. The second order needs a packing plan, not just a larger sticker. A case mark that reads “Cedar” while the box contains mixed fragrances creates a preventable picking error.

For a homogeneous case, show approved product identity and case quantity clearly. For an assortment, identify the actual assortment code and contents according to the buyer's system. Keep the label versions mapped to the box-building instructions. If the carton art changes but the SKU code does not, the operational data may be wrong even though the graphic looks new.

Place the label where it survives handling

Use the closed corrugated carton for the mockup. Avoid tape seams, fold lines, corners and surfaces likely to be covered by another shipping label. The barcode's size and position should follow the chosen scanning specification. On a rough box, adhesion and print contrast deserve a real sample check. Do not shrink a barcode to save room for branding without testing scan performance.

GS1's guideline discusses placement and legibility for logistics labels and notes that where both a carton label and logistics label are applied, neither should obscure the other's information. That is a useful layout principle. The final standard and barcode content depend on the customer's actual supply chain.

Give the brand a role without hiding the data

An original scent icon and restrained colour strip can help people distinguish “Cedar,” “Amber” and “Fig.” Use text as well as colour. A warehouse worker should not have to remember which brown is Amber and which brown is Fig. Put the SKU, pack count and vessel type in a stable information block.

If the buyer wants a plain utility label, that may be the right choice for the shipping carton even while the retail jar remains highly decorative. The image brief below still uses complete original design because a blank visual would not demonstrate how a brand and case data can coexist.

Send a version map, not a single PDF

For a hypothetical three-scent range with 100 cases per scent, list three specific carton-label artwork versions and quantities. Add separate variable shipping labels through the buyer's fulfilment process where required. Send the folded case size, board finish, packing configuration, SKU identifiers, barcode specification, label placement and application method with your YT Labels inquiry.
